What Probandle is

Probandle is a free daily diagnosis game for the clinical genetics community. Probandle is for educational purposes only. It is not a clinical or diagnostic tool. Nothing on it is medical advice, and no decision about a real patient should be based on it.

The cases

Each case is built from clinical facts extracted from public databases, drafted by AI within the game's rules and validation checks, and read by a person before it is scheduled. Cases are simplified for the game and may contain inaccuracies, and everything on the site is provided as is, with no warranty of accuracy, completeness or availability.

If a case says something wrong, use the report link on its reveal card, which opens an email with the case number already in the subject.

Sources and credit

The clinical facts in the cases, the list of disorders you can guess from and the gene symbols the game recognises are built from four public databases. Probandle is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them, and each publishes its data as is, without warranty.

None of this data is reproduced as published, except the definition on each reveal card, which quotes Orphanet word for word and credits it there. The facts are extracted, filtered and rewritten as hints, and the names and synonyms are merged (in places renamed) into the one list you can type into. A few names that clinicians use and none of the databases carries are added by hand. Probandle is responsible for any errors that introduces.

Reusing a case

The cases as Probandle wrote them are licensed under CC BY-NC 4.0, so you may copy and adapt one, for teaching slides for example, on the licence's conditions.

The definition on each reveal card is Orphanet's text under CC BY 4.0, not Probandle's, so this licence does not cover it and you may reuse it on Orphanet's terms.

Acceptable use

You may not:

download the cases or the site's data in bulk by automated requests
play the game with a script or a bot

Accounts

An account is optional and stores only your results, so that your streaks and statistics are the same on every device; signing in uses Google, and Probandle never holds a password. The privacy page lists what is stored and where, and you can download it, or delete the account with everything stored under it, from the account dialog at any time.

Probandle may close an account that is used in a way the acceptable use section does not allow.

Availability, liability and law

Probandle is free and comes with no service commitment, so it may change, pause or stop at any time. You use it at your own risk, and to the extent the law allows no liability is accepted for anything that follows from using it.

These terms are governed by Dutch law, and a dispute about them goes to the Dutch courts. If you use Probandle as a consumer, you keep the protection the law of your own country gives you.
