What Probandle is

Probandle is a free daily diagnosis game for the clinical genetics community. Probandle is for educational purposes only. It is not a clinical or diagnostic tool. Nothing on it is medical advice, and no decision about a real patient should be based on it.

The cases

Each case is built from clinical facts extracted from public databases, drafted by AI within the game's rules and validation checks, and read by a person before it is scheduled. Cases are simplified for the game and may contain inaccuracies, and everything on the site is provided as is, with no warranty of accuracy, completeness or availability.

If a case says something wrong, use the report link on its reveal card, which opens an email with the case number already in the subject.

From the end of the beta, each case is also drafted from the full text of a de-identified case report published in a medical journal, and open access reports are preferred. Probandle never quotes the report, and a case uses only part of what it says about the patient. A case never includes a photograph, the patient's name or initials, the hospital, a place or a date. The disorder's common findings and the genes known to cause it are taken from the databases listed below, so a case can include a finding the patient in the report did not have, or a genetic result the report does not give. Each difference from the report is written down along with what the report said, and the citation of every report is recorded and available on request.

Sources and credit

The clinical facts in the cases, the list of disorders you can guess from and the gene symbols the game recognises are built from four public databases. Probandle is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them, and each publishes its data as is, without warranty.

None of this data is reproduced as published. The facts are extracted, filtered and rewritten as hints, and the names and synonyms are merged (in places renamed) into the one list you can type into. Probandle is responsible for any errors that introduces.

Accounts

An account is optional and stores only your results, so that your streaks and statistics are the same on every device; signing in uses Google, and Probandle never holds a password. The privacy page lists what is stored and where, and you can download it, or delete the account with everything stored under it, from the account dialog at any time.

Availability and liability

Probandle is free and comes with no service commitment, so it may change, pause or stop at any time. You use it at your own risk, and to the extent the law allows no liability is accepted for anything that follows from using it. These terms are governed by Dutch law.
