Accessibility

Scope

This statement covers every page on probandle.com.

Standard

Probandle aims to meet level AA of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2.

Status

Probandle partially conforms to WCAG 2.2 level AA. No part of it is known to fail the standard, but it has these limitations:

• The game needs JavaScript, and so do the archive, the how-to-play dialog, the theme switch and the account dialog. You can read every other page without it, in the light theme.
• The only screen reader it has been tested with is NVDA, and it has not been tested on an iPhone or iPad.

What works

• You can do everything with the keyboard alone, including choosing a suggestion with the arrow keys and closing a dialog with Escape.
• Every control shows when it has keyboard focus.
• The guess box is marked up as an ARIA combobox, and with NVDA in Chrome the arrow keys read out each suggestion they reach.
• With NVDA in Chrome, each new hint, the result of each guess and the verdict at the end are read out, and the dialogs and the archive can be used.
• If your system is set to reduce motion, nothing on the board slides or shakes, and the dialogs open without moving.
• In forced colours mode, such as a Windows contrast theme, the background pattern is removed, and focus, the highlighted suggestion and the current page in the masthead stay marked.
• The site follows your system's light or dark setting until you choose a theme with the switch in the masthead.
• Every page is readable at 200% zoom, and at a width of 320 pixels without scrolling sideways.
• All the text met the WCAG AA contrast ratios in both themes when it was last measured, and an automated test checks the colour palette every time the site changes.

How it was tested

A script ran these checks in Chrome 152 on Windows 11 on 23 September 2026:

• the keyboard alone, on every page, through a whole game and through every control in the account dialog
• 200% zoom, and a width of 320 pixels, on every page
• forced colours and reduced motion, through Chrome's emulation
• every page with JavaScript switched off
• the light and dark themes
• the contrast of all the text on every page, in both themes
• Chrome's accessibility tree, which holds the names and states that assistive technology reads

On the same day, a whole game, the suggestions, the dialogs and the archive were tried by hand with the NVDA 2026.2 screen reader in Chrome on Windows 11.
